Narrative

A transportation hub… and no more. I remembered those days when I would dread waiting at the Bus Stand Klang for buses that was scheduled to come at 7am and all I did was queuing between the foul smell, scorching heat and staring at the same physical being of empty Bus Stand Klang for the next two hours when the bus finally came.

I remembered wishing - if only within that two torturing hours I could spend on listening to music… or watch a movie… or being entertained throughout my time rather than it wastefully spent on waiting.

But today…

Today, the transportation hub has a whole new image. As I descended from Pasar Seni LRT, the Bus Stand Klang is no longer a boring car park but a place of colourful lively activities and shapes. Bus Stand Klang is finally a place of gather and not just a place of transition.

Thesis

I'm undergoing a thesis project named Centre for Independent Arts @ Benteng KL.
This project is a requirement for me to earn my Bachelor of Architecture degree from University Malaya, Malaysia.

Do share your personal opinion regarding this as this project is about everyday people. I converse in English and Malay :) so do please write any comments in those languages only otherwise I'll need a translator ;)

Independent art is a freeform expression that requires little funding. Indie art derives from DIY or Indie culture which are considered transient people. These people resides into transient spaces as this is where people who ‘do not fit–in’ come to practice their activities, away from the control, labeling and surveillance of the designated urban areas. There is an element of freedom in these spaces, which nurtures life and fosters creativity.

They are asylum seekers, opportunity seekers. They often look for audience but audience is not sure where to look for them. Indie artists are deprived of sense of belonging.

There is no particular area where creativity and independent culture are concentrated. Indie movement scattered all over Malaysia and they are only often seen during events. With Actor’s Studio becoming more mainstream and the development of KL Pac that has left a void that concerns more to mainstream. This void as well has been left not affordable. The proposal is about filling a void of a need for the poorer fans. This center is where it takes place.

Looking into the Klang Valley area, it appears that Central Market has the most dense indie community movement within 10km radius. Bus Stand Klang became the area that could foster this indie creativity as it was dense with pedestrians and there is unclaimed territory at the embankment of the Klang River and also the Bus Stand Klang itself.

The concept of this project is adaptability/ adjustability as the art is about freedom and spontaneity of the arts. Adaptable structures features repositionable partitions or are changeable per user/occupant. So the adaptable aspects of this building shall help to encourage the freedom and spontaneity of the arts. Adaptability in this context means that the spaces would be able to adapt or conform to a particular situation or use. For instance, a transformable balcony that could fold up into a wall shall create an enclosed space which could cater for Music/ Filming events as it enhances the use of acoustic and artificial lighting. When it opens, it could cater for a gallery space that exploits the use of natural lighting. Another idea of adaptability/ adjustability is that the spaces could cater for busking as it is a type of Indie art.

If anybody has an idea on how I can approach on this adaptability/ adjustability space, please do comment. Many thanks!
